You know movies. You’ve seen lots of them. So how hard could it be to convert your memoir, novel, short story, or even an epic poem into a movie? After all, writing is writing, right? Piece of cake. Or is it? How would you begin?
Mary Turner and Brenda Wilson have both given it a go and have some advice, practical and theoretical, to help with whatever you’re writing. Find out if screenwriting is for you. Or better yet, find some screenplay techniques that will make whatever you’re writing explode on the page.
Mary and Brenda are members of the Burlington Writers Club. With degrees in speech and drama, theater history and criticism, Mary has worked in professional theater, written theater criticism and taught theater arts. She woke up one day and thought screenwriting would be fun. Several of her short plays have been produced locally. More recently, and at Brenda’s urging, she attended a meeting at the Studio Screenwriters Association at Atlantic & Pacific Studios and caught the screenwriting bug.
Brenda is the author of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction books and has written for newspapers and area magazines. Her latest publication, See-Saws & Yo-Yo’s: A Memoir, is under consideration for a film. Brenda is a member of Story Sisters and SistaWRITE. In 2020, she attended a casting call at Atlantic & Pacific Studios and enrolled in their Introduction to Film class. Her youthful desire to become an actor came true. She is BWC’s liaison to Atlantic & Pacific Studios and president of the Studio Screenwriters Association.
