This workshop is for poets looking to sharpen their precision tool–the line break. We’re going to explore the function of line breaks and practice breaking lines. Bring a poem or two you are working on, or use examples provided by the instructor.

Cheryl Wilder’s collection, Anything That Happens, a Tom Lombardo Poetry Selection (Press 53, 2021), was named Second Finalist in the Poetry Society of Virginia North American Book Award and received Honorable Mention in the Brockman-Campbell Book Award. Her forthcoming poetry collection, In the Presence Of (Press 53, 2025)—companion to her first collection—is being supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and Durham Arts Council, local grants administrator. She’s author of the chapbook, What Binds Us, co-editor of Waterwheel Review, co-leader of the For Alamance Arts & Culture Team, the 2022-24 president of the Burlington Writers Club, and earned her MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Why an evening workshop?
In last year’s survey of BWC members, some people requested adding weeknight workshops. The Executive Committee hasn’t been able to establish a weeknight workshop, mostly due to lack of funding–we take pride in paying a stipend to our workshop facilitators. To fulfill the request, (and perhaps to bid adieu to her tenure as president), Cheryl is presenting two weeknight workshops for Poetry Month. One is for all genres. One is poetry specific.
